An Unlikely Encounter

While the AqGas team were in Ilkeston for a scheduled meeting with our accountants, Mint Accountants, we were delighted to unexpectedly cross paths with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He was carrying out interviews in the local café, The Hub, where we had scheduled our meeting. Of course, we had to take the opportunity to take a few photos. This was certainly a meeting we won’t forget in a hurry!


Aqgas Visits University of Nottingham Power Research Centre!

The AqGas DECOM team recently visited the University of Nottingham’s Powertrain Research Centre (PRC), which conducts fundamental experimental and analytical research into vehicle propulsion, advanced fuels and combustion technologies.
AqGas has partnered with the PRC to develop and submit a proposal to the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition 7 (CMDC7), with the aim of advancing the DECOM technology and demonstrating its potential to enable clean, efficient ammonia-fuelled maritime propulsion.
AqGas’s patented DECOM technology provides a more energy-efficient alternative to conventional ammonia cracking. By reducing the energy required to convert ammonia into hydrogen by more than 50%, eliminating the need for high-temperature operation and removing reliance on rare-earth catalysts, DECOM has the potential to significantly improve the economics and scalability of green ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel.
The CMDC7 project will demonstrate the DECOM ammonia decomposition unit, a novel low-temperature technology designed to generate hydrogen on demand from green ammonia and support highly efficient ammonia-fuelled internal combustion engines for maritime applications.
The marine engine will operate using a fuel mix of green ammonia and hydrogen, with the hydrogen generated onboard from green ammonia using the DECOM system. This approach enables a single-fuel storage system, avoiding the need for a separate onboard hydrogen storage system, while enabling the use of green ammonia as the primary fuel and avoiding carbon emissions at the point of combustion.
Beyond maritime propulsion, the technology is being developed for applications including stationary power generation, locomotive engines and other heavy-duty industrial sectors where direct electrification is challenging. By enabling efficient ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion at the point of use, DECOM could support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, improve energy efficiency and strengthen energy security through the wider adoption of clean ammonia and hydrogen-based energy systems.
The technology therefore has the potential to accelerate the adoption of green ammonia across shipping, ports, rail, heavy transport and industrial power generation, while creating a scalable platform for the development of next-generation zero-carbon power systems.

AqGas visit to India as part of InnovateUKs Urban Systems Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) with India.

Saj Sayani of AqGas was invited to join the UK delegation for a visit to Chennai and Coimbatore to explore opportunities and make connections with Indian businesses with a view to developing working relationships in India.
The trip was very interesting with visits to the Deputy British High Commission in Chennai, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Tamil Nadu Global Startup Summit (TNGSS). There were some very interesting conversations about the new AqGas DECOM unit which Decomposes Ammonia into the constituent gases (Nitrogen and Hydrogen) using a new process which is a more efficient, quicker and simpler option than traditional ‘cracking’.
Travelling with the InnovateUK delegation ensured that important Indian business leaders and entrepreneurs were accessible to the group. This provided important opportunities for collaboration in business and research which would ordinarily not be available.

UKAEA Award - Continued R&D!

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), the UK’s national fusion energy research and development organisation, has awarded six organisations with £9.6 million of contracts to advance their concepts to support fusion energy development.
"These organisations have been awarded contracts to scale up their projects after successfully developing their technologies to the ‘proof of concept’ stage. The continued support from the Fusion Industry Programme will enable these fusion projects to be scaled up and contribute further to the growth of the global fusion powerplant market."
Aqsorption and IVe Ammonia Storage for Hydrogen Vehicle

In pursuit of sustainable and clean energy solutions, IVe (Innervated Vehicle Engineering Ltd) has embarked on a strategic collaboration with Aqsorption, a leading innovator in advanced materials and hydrogen crackers/decomposers. Together, we are working to develop an innovative automotive ammonia storage and decompostion system that will serve as a key component in the production of hydrogen for fuel cells. This partnership signifies a significant step towards realizing our vision of a cleaner and more efficient automotive industry.


Bassingfield Solar Park
21 October
Planning permission has been granted to build a Solar Park at the Bassingfield site. This solar park will power a Green Hydrogen production facility using the green electricity generated on site. Work is now underway to commence the build and commissioning of the Solar park and associated Hydrogen production plant, with production of Green Hydrogen expected to commence in 2024.
The Team Visit Toyota Hydrogen Event
16 October, 2023
The team visited the East Midlands Hydrogen partners Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd in Burnaston, Derby for an event to showcase the plans underway to realise the hydrogen opportunity in the East Midlands region. The event hosted over 150 local industry partners, including hydrogen producers, distributors and more than 30 prospective industrial users of hydrogen, local authority representatives, as well as political champions of hydrogen.
The event illustrated how East Midlands Hydrogen will support the development of a hydrogen ecosystem, create new skilled jobs and training opportunities, enable business startups and scaleups, whilst supporting levelling up across the East Midlands.


Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre Collaboration

Paul, our MD at Aqsorption, at the University of Manchester as Steve Barclay MP also visits. We are working with GEIC and the Henry Royce Institute collaborating on advanced and nano-engineered material science projects to develop electrolyser components with considerable improvements to the current state-of-play. The outcomes will increase hydrogen yield and add robustness and lifespan to our products and advance sector knowledge.
